RIDERS were able to pit their skills at a new venue on the outskirts of Redruth on Sunday when Pendennis Motor Club held their Anning Cup Trial.

Following the recent spell of dry weather and persistent rain the day before the event, it made the conditions perfect for the steep climbs and drops that made up the sections at the new location.

With Cornwall Championship points also up for grabs, it was going to be an interesting day for the competitors over this untried terrain. After the first lap on the A route it looked as if it was going to be a four- way fight for honours with Jason Lawer holding a one mark advantage over Schoolboy Ian Martin and three marks over Shaun Martin and George Edyvean.

Lawer pulled further ahead after the second lap with a loss of two marks for the complete circuit, leaving Shaun to get the better of George and Ian who blew his chances with a disastrous 15 mark debut. Lawer remained in control on the third and final lap and bettered his second lap score by one, giving him a comfortable class win. Edyvean got his act together to just pip Shaun for the runner-up position and although Ian left his fightback too late and had to settle for fourth place overall he easily took the Schoolboy win.

On B Route, Robin Martin and Shaun Philp continued the season- long rivalry by pulling clear of their rivals after the first lap. It was Philp who had the upper hand in the early stages, but they were level after the second lap. Philp started the final lap with a maximum five mark loss in the first section, and Martin returned his best lap score to clinch the class. Philp was certainly lucky to hold on to the runner up spot as Dave Richards' laps of 13, three and six just failed to claim him the runner up spot, showing that his costly first circuit was too much to overcome.

Things were certainly close on C course with eight riders returning single mark scores for their day's competition. Andrew Kearns showed his intentions by staying clean after his first lap with the two Bray's, Adrian and Billy, hot on his heels with one mark each.

Kearns slipped a little second time around, keeping Billy in contention, but Adrian fell off the leader board with a maximum five at section six. Kearns kept his head to finish on a three mark loss and win the class on the tie break decider from Richard Trott who equalled Kearns' first lap clean sheet.

The Mono Novices on C course also had to use the tie break to settle the class winner. Simon Ferris claimed it with lap returns of two, four, four against Kevin Martin's five, three, two scores and 16 sections cleaned and with Ferris on one more it was just enough. Matching the class winner on his first lap, Paul Roberts could not maintain it and steadily slipped back to third place.

Another tie break situation had to settle the outcome of the Schoolboy B's with Lisa Orchard holding the advantage after the first lap. The eventual runner up Charlie Mooney reversed the scores second time around and matching each other on their final circuit, it was Lisa who had the more "cleans" on the count back.

Daniel Yelland didn't have to worry about any tie breaks in taking the C class. He gained enough of a cushion after his first and second laps to resist Sam Jeffery's last lap fightback. In returning consistent laps of four, three, four, Ross Tremaine took the D course by just edging Oliver Lawers return of five, six and three.

Michael Jewell and Ali Smith were always in control of the sidecars, but for a brief hiccup midway through their second lap they took the class with a nine mark advantage over Paul Lawer and Chris Macabee.

The organisers expressed their thanks to the working parties who gave up their time to clear the sections, especially the landowner who gave the club the opportunity to use the land at this new venue.
