UPDATE: The fire service reports that crews are making slow but good progress tackling the blaze using four sets of breathing apparatus and three main jets.
Parts if Penryn were covered in a thick pall of smoke this evening due to a fibreglass boat on fire behind Asda.
Firefighters are urging Penryn residents near Asda to keep their doors and windows closed as they tackle a blaze on land behind the store and Carpetshed.
A fire service spokesperson said: "Due to copious amounts of smoke from a boat fire that crews from Falmouth, Helston and Truro are currently tackling, behind Asda Stores at Penryn, the wholetime officer on scene has requested local residents keep their doors and windows closed."
The manager of Kitty Gubbins vintage clothing, who has a unit on Kernick Industrial Estate overlooking the site, took several photos of the blaze from across the fields.
She reported seeing at least two fire engines going past, and said she believed the fire was at Cygnus boat molds behind Jennings Road.
Police are on the scene and have closed Kernick Road from the Penryn Athletic up past the Asda roundabout, to protect the public from smoke inhalation.
