STEVE Downing of Clinton SC became the first player for over 20 years to win the Cornwall Billiards and Snooker Individual Titles in the same year when he defeated his team mate Gary Bray 5-2 in the Snooker Individual Final.
Steve has played some great snooker over the last four years winning a lot of individual events but surprisingly, he was still looking for his first county individual snooker title since moving to Cornwall. Gary had won the title on six previous occasions.
Steve started the match in good form winning the first frame aided by a 49 break. The second frame started scrappy, Steve built up a lead with the help of a 31 break but Gary came back to win on the black. Steve had a 38 break off Gary's break in frame three and comfortably won the frame. Gary pulled back level again by clearing the last red and colours to win the fourth frame on the black.
After the break Steve got the upper hand, when he built up a 44 point lead in frame five, however Gary came back with a 32 break. A poor safety followed and this enabled Steve to take the frame. Steve played steady in the last 2 frames to win the match 5-2.
