HAYLE 0 ILLOGAN 2

ILLOGAN were crowned Jolly's Combination League champions at Trevesack Park on Saturday when they defeated Hayle 2-0 to clinch the title.

Unfortunately for Illogan, there was no crowning ceremony for the players to enjoy as there was no official from the Jolly's Combination League at the game to make a presentation.

Club member, Mr Lester Thomas, said the club was disgusted by the actions of the league's committee: "This has to be the snub of all snubs," said Mr Thomas. "We have been playing all season and on Saturday we were the only team that could technically win the league. If we won it did not matter a jot how the other clubs got on, but as it happened they all dropped points.

"Therefore, why on earth was there no official from the league at our game to make the presentation. The players and the management are hugely disappointed.

"The league officials could have had the cup in the boot of a car and taken it away again if we had lost, but that wasn't the case.

"It is not a lot to ask and it was also our last game of the season. So who wants the trophy presented on some austere occasion when we are not playing? Certainly not the players and certainly not the club who wanted to celebrate the occasion when it happened on the pitch. Now it will just be a damp squib!

"The players are livid about the situation and we cannot believe how badly we have been treated."

The road to the title has been a long one, but at half-time Illogan could still not be certain after the teams went in locked at 0-0.

Three minutes into the second half Illogan took the lead when Ryan Treloar's cross to the far post cut out two defenders and left Rodney Gregory with the chance to volley the ball into the net.

It was nip and tuck for the next 20 minutes, but Illogan's nerves were settled 15 minutes from time Gregory ran on to Gary Sturmey's pass and gave the 'keeper no chance with a clinical finish.

* Illogan have also revealed that they will not be seeking entry into the Cornwall division of the new South West Peninsula League. With Steve Roscoe having indicated that he will not be managing at the club next season, officials believe they are not equipped to enter the league for several reasons both on and off the pitch.
