For four Helston youngsters this year's Flora Day is set to be extra special, after they were given the honour of the leading the children's dance.

This year is the turn of Nansloe Primary School to head the dance, which will see hundreds of schoolchildren wind their way through the town's streets dressed all in white.

At the very front will be four excited year six pupils from the school: Amy Carter, Molly Eley, Matthew Henderson and Owen, all aged 11, who have been selected to lead the school.

Starting the dance as lead couple will be Owen and Amy. They will then swap with Molly and Matthew, who will take the position of lead couple during the second half of the dance, after the halfway break at Lismore Gardens.

The two sets of couples have been dancing together throughout their school life and are all Helston born. For Amy the honour of leading runs in the family, as her grandfather, Perry Tripp, led the midday dance in 2000.

Amy said: "I'm looking forward to everything. We've doing practices as a school in the hall and the playground. It's lucky that we're in year six when Nansloe is leading."

The four were selected by year two teacher Katy Rosevear, who is in charge of Flora Day preparations at the school.

It will be a particularly special year for Nansloe come May 8, as year three teacher Rebecca Eldred has also been selected to be the second leading lady in the midday dance.

Miss Eldred said of the four: "We're very proud of them. It's hard to decide who leads as they all want to and have done it for years and years. All of our pupils are excellent, but a decision had to be made."

She explained the four were selected because they were in year six and therefore had the most experience of dancing, adding that the fact they were all Helston born had also been an important factor.
