ONE of the best-known names in English football, Sir Trevor Brooking, has accepted an invitation to perform the honours at the opening of Wendron United Football Club's new £700,000 changing complex.
Project manager Alan Watson was delighted by Brooking agreeing to the request: "The club is absolutely delighted to have obtained his services and in particular it's good for Cornish soccer to have such a gentleman perform the honours," said Alan.
"There will be a whole programme of events organised for the day and elements of the press, radio and TV will be in attendance."
Progress on the imposing building at their Underlane ground has slowed down due to circumstances beyond the club's control. Heavy rain in February caused extensive flooding in the building. This meant a three week delay whilst the drying out process was carried out, a requirement prior to the floor screed being laid.
Fortunately the club had the use of the geothermal heating system to provide warmth to the underfloor heating.
The resin finish to the walls and floors could then be started and a company from Wales was chosen but additional problems were encountered.
A further delay of three weeks meant more frustration, but the club now feels there is light at the end of the tunnel and the facility is expected to be complete sometime towards the end of May.
The date set for the official opening is set for Saturday, July 28, and whould be a memorable occasion with the FA's Director of Football Development, Sir Trevor Brooking, adding to the excitement.
