Refurbishment work is coming to an end on Falmouth's main post office building.

The conclusion of work will mean that post office facilities, which are currently being run from a temporary location in the former St Julia's Hospice charity shop, at the bottom of Berkley Vale, should be back in their traditional home on The Moor by next month.

Work has been carried out on the building since early January. At the time, Glynis Martin, who along with her partner Don runs the post office and the £Plus shop from the site, explained that the move was "unavoidable," adding: "When we first took over the post office it was supposed to stay where it was while the building was being redeveloped. Since then engineers have been in and found it would be too dangerous for us to stay here while it was being redeveloped."

Nick Gittens, network service manage for Post office Ltd, has now announced: "I am pleased to confirm that the work allowing the move back to The Moor is now nearing completion." He said he expected the office to be open for business on May 21.

However, Mr Gittens continued that this would unfortunately mean that the Berkeley Vale site would close on Tuesday, May 15, so that the facilities could be transferred back across The Moor.

"I must apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the short break in service, which is necessary whilst Falmouth post office moves back to its permanent home. I know that the local community will join me in welcoming the return of the post office to The Moor and I would like to thank them for their patience and support during the disruption and urge them to visit the post office to see the new facilities for themselves," he concluded.

The news that the office on The Moor was to reopen has been welcomed by MP for Falmouth Julia Goldsworthy. Miss Goldsworthy said: "It is good news that the refurbishment works have now been completed and a date has been set for the post office to return to 'business as usual' at its traditional home. Falmouth post office provides a vital service to local people and I'm looking forward to visiting the renovated building."
