ONE thing most supporters of Porthleven Football Club have learned to do is not set their watches by them. You just can't be sure you'll get the timing right.

Having gone nine games without a win, they have now chalked up four successive victories after their impressive 4-1 win at Newquay in the Carlsberg SWL.

Back to near full strength, Porthleven had to come from a goal down before finishing emphatic winners with striker Tom Lamborn helping himself to a hat-trick and then being substituted for his efforts. You just can't please some people!

On a bumpy Mount Wise surface there was little to choose between the sides in the opening stages, but after ten minutes Newquay were gifted a goal by the referee. Ben Medlin, shepherding the ball out of play, was ruled to have pushed Ashley Bradshaw and Gavin West made no mistake from the spot kick.

Within a minute the Fishermen were back on level terms when a good pass from Jamie Burr found Lamborn who gave the 'keeper no chance with a clinical finish from 14 yards.

Kevin Lawrence, always industrious, shot wide after a good run, but he should have done better with a shot minutes later. Lamborn headed Gordon Richie's long throw back to Lawrence who drove over when well placed.

Porthleven took the lead in the 28th minute when good play between Lawrence and Andy Westgarth set up a chance for Lamborn who was not going to pass up a second goal.

Goalkeeper Scott Palmer came to the Peppermints' rescue when he managed to beat out Fraser Cadman's free kick, but Lamborn almost grabbed a third when his first-time shot from Jamie Thirkle's pass whistled over the bar.

Newquay had a half chance to get back on level terms when Luke Wheldon got on the end of Atkins' corner, but he put his lob over the bar.

Westgarth had a good shot well saved by Palmer, but right on half time Cadman was in the right place to clear Ollie Deadman's goal-bound effort off the line from a corner.

The early part of the second half was well contested, but in the 59th minute Porthleven extended their lead when Lamborn notched his and Porthleven's third with a bullet header from Lawrence's corner.

Both Lawrence and Lamborn were substituted after 74 minutes, but the chances still came along for Port with Westgarth again driving over when well placed.

Another very good move saw Mike Davies pick out Nigel Thwaites, but his goal-bound header was cleared off the line by Dickens.

Ten minutes from time Porthleven ensured all three points with a fourth goal when a superb pass by Davies found Westgarth who beat the 'keeper with a classic finish.

Tonight Penryn Athletic are the visitors to Gala Parc and on Saturday the Fishermen visit Tavistock.
