AS the deadline for withdrawals for next weeks district and parish elections passed on Thursday, it became clear there will be only six contested parishes in the Carrick area.
AS those candidates who had been nominated for more than one area made their final choice and some dropped out altogether, the lists for May 3 election showed that voters will turn out in Falmouth town council's Arwenack, Boslowick and Trescobeas wards. Penryn town council will also see and election and so too will St Just in Roseland, St Mawes ward and Perranzabuloe parish council, Perranporth ward.
In the Carrick district council elections, there will be "no contest" in Probus and Penryn where nominated candidates will be returned unopposed.
In neighbouring Kerrier there will be elections in only six parish councils, Camborne town council south, Camborne town council West, Landewednack, Redruth town council north, St Keverne - Coverak ward and St Keverne.
In the Kerrier district elections, it will be no contest in five areas. Helston north and south, Mabe and Budock, Mullion, and St Keverne.
It remains to be seen what interest is shown by the public in the elections next month. Parish and district elections are well known for poor. For the district elections on May 3 it may be the last time they are held if a unitary authority for Cornwall is agreed and one new authority goes ahead in two or three year's time.
All returning officers in the area agree that with only a 30 per cent turn out of electors last time round this year is unlikely to be much better unless people were urged to get out and vote.
There will be many new faces in parish and district councils after May 3 whatever the outcome. There have been a number of retirements and numerous fresh faces have appeared on election leaflets.
All main parties will be fighting for a place on the districts, not least Ukip which is fielding candidates in Falmouth and Camborne.
