Organisers of the horse show traditionally held on Helston Flora Day have moved the event to a different day in a bid to ease a logistical "nightmare".

The show, which for decades has taken place on the same day as Helston's premier event, is being held this year on the preceding day - Monday May 7 - a Bank Holiday.

Show chairman Frank Rose said trying to organise the event on the same day as Flora Day had proved increasingly difficult.

"It was becoming a nightmare," he said. "People were telling me they could help the day before or the day after but not on Flora Day itself. It wasn't so bad if it was a Saturday but when it falls in the week numbers are way down.

"We also had problems with all the show traffic trying to get into the town and things like getting the police we needed."

Mr Rose, the landlord of the Wheel Inn at Cury, said a horse show previously held in Carbis Bay on the Bank Holiday Monday at the start of May was no longer taking place - freeing up the date for the Helston event.

"I know it is a break with tradition but it makes sense," he said. "Entries are up already, hiring things is much easier and people are telling me they can help out because it's not Flora Day. It seems to suit all the way round."

The show - now re-named the Helston Flora Horse Show - will in future always take place on the Bank Holiday Monday at the start of May. The event is held in the show field off Meneage Road.
