Plans have been finalised for a spectacular commemoration day at Boconnoc House, Lostwithiel, on Sunday, June 3, marking three historic conflict anniversaries and with The Duke of Kent as guest of honour.
The six-hour programme of special events will be the South West's major commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict, the 40th anniversary of the withdrawal from Aden and the 50th anniversary of the end of the Korean campaign.
Organised by Cornwall branch of the Royal British Legion RBL, veterans from all three campaigns will have the chance to meet the Duke and enjoy a programme of entertainments and ceremonies involving several thousand people.
Highlights of the "Cornwall County Festival of Commemoration and Veterans Day" will include a flypast by military aircraft, a display by the Red Devils Parachute Team, arena activities, a parade and church service at the War Memorial, and performances by three bands, a Beat the Retreat and laying of wreaths. Military vehicles will support the March Past.
The event, with Truro-based Skinners Brewery appointed as principal sponsor, will incorporate the annual Cornwall RBL Rally, supported by RBL branches, clubs and military associations across the county. It has been chosen to lead into the National Falklands Anniversary events taking place in London.
Accompanied by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Lady Mary Holborow, and senior military figures from the conflicts, the Duke of Kent will be introduced to veterans and present Lord Lieutenant Cadet prizes. Military guests will award Veterans Badges.
The Duke of Kent will give a short address from the dais and will take the salute at the War Memorial during the March Past. He and Lady Mary will attend receptions and the Dean of Truro Cathedral will take Memorial Prayers.
Gates will open at 12 noon and the programme will end at 6 pm. Truro-based Skinners Brewery have been appointed principal sponsor and food and bar facilities will be available in the main marquee and stable areas.
"The festival will be one of the biggest events ever held in Cornwall and we are very much looking forward to welcoming as many veterans and Legion members, together with members of the public, as possible," said event co-ordinator Keith Naylor.
"A prime aim of the day is to enable young people and other members of the public to be more aware of the high levels of commitment and sacrifice given to this country by former and current armed service men and women."
Bands taking part in the festival will be HMS Seahawk Volunteer Band, the Caledonian Pipe Band and the St Austell Band.
Cornwall RBL are returning to the scene of their celebration of the 60th anniversary of VE/VJ Day at Boconnoc two years ago, when another day-long spectacular was the South West highlight of the nation's celebrations.
