A "Car Free Falmouth" petition collected around 400 signatures last weekend. The event, which took place, on Saturday 28 April, was organised by both Friends of the Earth (FOE) and Transition Falmouth.
The petition supports plans in favour of placing bollards in Church Street and to remind residents and visitors that between 11am and 4pm access along Market Street is only for Church Street car park.
Both Kate Ormrod and Betty Levene who have been actively involved in the event as part of Falmouth FOE, believe it was a problem that needed to be recognised.
Kate said: "Lots of people are fed up with the continuing car congestion in our shopping streets; if we want a viable shopping centre, the best way to achieve that is to reduce dependence on private car access and make Falmouth a place where people will actually want to come to."
From the impressive support they received on Saturday FOE are very aware the event was a success and will hopefully lead to positive action being taken to fight car congestion on Falmouth's high streets.
"Although we met with some unnecessary, aggressive behaviour, everyone who was involved in the event feels the town is worth it and as the flyer for the event says 'together we can make a difference'," said Ms Omrod.
Earlier on in the week FOE held another meeting regarding climate change, which allowed people to hear about plans that have already been developed to combat the issue. They were also able to discuss other options to provide solutions.
