Children from Trewirgie School in Redruth were awarded a Certificate of Achievement in last year's Cornwall Community Awards for helping to transform the town's Victoria Park.
Working with Cormac's parks and gardens team, the youngsters helped to create stunning bedding displays, wild flower area’s and a bug hotel.
Cormac gardener, Matt Stannard, said:“I am very impressed with the children’s enthusiasm and hard work. They are a credit to the school.”
The volunteer programme has been devised to give the children ownership of their local park and an insight into the work that goes into making the park look so good. The programme runs in two parts - firstly, in spring the children put over 3,000 plants into the flowerbeds creating displays for all to enjoy. Then, at the end of the season, they take the plants out, potting on the perennials for next year and composting the annuals.
Michael Foy, South West in Bloom judge, said: “The seasonal floral planting are some of the best displays I have seen in over half a century in horticulture.”
