Peggy Hayward, who was brought up in Treverva and Budock, is celebrating her 100th birthday at her home in Billericay today (Wednesday).

The great-grandmother of five, was born in Cornwall and after leaving school at the age of 17 she had dreams of becoming a teacher. Sadly, a previous bout of glandular fever meant she wasn't accepted into teacher training so she went to work at the Post Office until 1938 when she married Alec Hayward.

The couple then moved to Ruislip until the war when they relocated back to Cornwall where their children, Roger and Catherine were born. In 1945 Peggy and Alec then moved to Hildenborough in Kent.
