To celebrate its eighth anniversary of broadcasting across Falmouth and Penryn, Source FM has given its shipping container studios a brand new look with a mural created by one of its presenters and local artist, Cosmic.
The vibrant mural, which was funded by Big Lottery through the Awards For All grant scheme, is designed to appeal to younger people who might be interested in volunteering for a radio programme and goes hand in hand with some other exciting changes the station has planned for 2017.
Station manager Matthew Rogers said: “Source FM has been hugely successful in recruiting hundreds of volunteers over the years but we have always struggled to get teenagers and school-age children to volunteer, which is a bit of a problem for us. We are here to represent the local community and if we are not doing that equally then we are not doing our job properly.”
The mural project started last year at one of the station’s ParkLive events in Kimberley Park when Cosmic gave an art workshop where young people in the crowd were asked to draw their ideas about the station on an enormous wooden radio created especially for the event. Cosmic took the inspiration from the young people's drawings and turned it into the colourful mural that you see today on the side of the Source FM shipping container/studio in Tregenver Road.
The image shows the head of a Source FM presenter shouting as rainbows, fireworks, ships and musical notes shoot out of their mouth. Cosmic said: “It’s been great, a fantastic opportunity to create something that describes what I feel about Source FM as well as from working with young listeners. I hope some of them will get together to do a show.”
You can watch a time-lapse film of the creation of the mural at youtube.com/watch?v=h2NjyIXReEc. The Lottery award of £7,000 will also contribute to the creation of a new logo as well as a new website for Source FM.
