THERE has been another bumper overall entry of 117, including 57 in the men's singles for the Duchy of Cornwall 25th "Open" Badminton Championships.

Now in its eighth year as a Badminton England satellite ranking tournament, and with the prize-fund, swollen to £1,260, takes place at Carn Brea Leisure Centre, near Redruth, - on Saturday and Sunday On Saturday, at 10 am, there is the men's and ladies' singles, followed by mixed doubles, extending to the semi-finals stage on the Saturday evening.

Sunday sees the mixed doubles semi-finals and final, pus men's and ladies' level doubles.

Gloucestershire's Rebecca Pantaney (England ranked 4), the former England senior international, tops the seedings in two events - ladies' singles, and the doubles, partnering Sarah Burgess (Hampshire), the 2006 champion, with Kate Holdway.

Miss Burgess teams up first with Cheshire's Matthew Sprake, where they are the leaders of the mixed doubles' group "A" (one of six), which gets underway on the Saturday afternoon with the semi-finals and final on the Sunday morning.

Mark Sellwood, from Warwickshire, ranked England no. 28, has been made the favourite in the men's singles, the corresponding blue ribband event, with the final scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The men's doubles, on day two, has Ivybridge brothers Matt and Dan Corby in pole position with Lancashire's Keith Cuncarr and David Edgar in the number two position.

There has been a magnificent turnout from Cornwall, the host, with 26 competitors, including over 20 youngsters from the Cornwall Youth Badminton Organisation.

Emily James (Falmouth), aged 16, the Cornwall Senior "closed" singles champion, faces an enthralling encounter against Crediton's talented Charlotte Hawkins, in the ladies' singles first round match.

The main sponsors of the event are Graphic Solutions, from Aldershot, Hampshire, together with Tag Sports from Newton Abbot, and Portsmouth, in conjunction with Yonex UK Ltd, have once more joined forces as the tournament's joint main sponsors.

The Countryman Inns free houses group, at Piece, Carnkie, together with Dales Renault (Scorrier and Summercourt) are amongst the other generous sponsors, of the championships in its silver anniversary year.
