Congratulations to the Falmouth Ladies A gig rowing team who swept to victory at the Cornwall County Pilot Gig Championships held at Newquay over the weekend. Hours of intensive and exhaustive training in all winds and weather paid off for this experienced crew who are a delight to watch when they row. More than 80 ladies crews from across Cornwall attended the event.

Racing got under way after a slightly delayed start due to sea mist, with the weather providing a flat, calm sea.

The finals were organised into three rounds, each consisting of a number of heats. The first two rounds took place on the Saturday, with the third round and the final on Sunday.

In the third round quarter finals Falmouth Ladies A and B were drawn in the same heat, against some stiff competition.

The A crew won the heat, but the B crew came fourth and missed out on a place in the finals by a mere eight seconds.

Janet Cave, a highly experienced rower with many world championships wins under her belt during her time with the Falmouth A crew and now rowing in the Ladies' B crew, said that they were all "disappointed but just fired up now for next year."

In the finals, Falmouth Ladies' A won comfortably by about four lengths ahead of Roseland and Caradon.

Falmouth Junior Under 16s also did well, winning their first heat and coming second in the next heat to take them through to the final, which saw Fowey coming in first, followed by Roseland in second and Falmouth taking third.

The end of the gig season is marked by the Men's finals in Newquay, taking place over the weekend of September 22 and should provide an exciting spectacle for anybody attending.
