PERRANPORTH 1

HELSTON 5

THERE'S no holding Helston at the moment as they continue to chalk up one victory after another and set the pace at the top of the Jolly's Combination League.

After their narrow win against Mullion in midweek, they finished convincing winners against Perran after a quiet start.

There was little to choose between the sides in the opening stages as the players struggled to keep control of the ball on the bumpy surface, but the Blues edged in front after 15 minutes when Alex Sharkey won possession and fed the ball through to Reg Pearson who ran at the home defence before firing in a shot from the edge of the box that the'keeper parried but only for Dominic Pullen to pounce and score.

Perran continued to look dangerous on the break, but it was Helston who extended their lead in the 24th minute when Nathan Rathbone's curling free kick was dropped by the goalkeeper for Aaron Collick to make no mistake with his gift-wrapped goal.

Perran put the Blues under pressure, but the defence ensured that goalkeeper Barry Hennessey had little to do. However, it needed a terrific clearance from Alex Sharkey who blocked a goal-bound shot.

With the sun making an appearance and the breeze behind them in the second half, Helston took control and it needed a good save from the 'keeper to deny Pullen a goal from his header following a cross by Rathbone.

Pearson was substituted in the 55th minute after what looked a blatant foul and two minutes later Helston added a third goal when Pullen headed Rathbone's corner back across the face of goal for Graham Blake to lash the ball high into the roof of the home team's net.

Helston were looking dangerous with every attack as Perran's game began to wilt in the sun and in the 68th minute the visitors scored a fourth goal when they held the ball up to beat the offside trap. Steve Hawke timed his pass over the top to perfection for Pullen to beat the 'keeper with a well-executed lob.

Liam Eddy scored the goal of the game ten minutes from time when he picked up the ball wide on the flank and cut in before unleashing a terrific 35-yard shot that gave the 'keeper no chance.

A lapse in concentration cost Helston a goal in injury time when the home side worked a one-two for to bury his shot past Hennessey.

On Saturday Helston are home to Newquay, kick off 3 pm.
