Plans by a new Helston supermarket to sell alcohol late into the evening have been condemned by one local resident as "absolutely appalling".

Lidl UK, which is building a new store on the former Arlington garage site at St Johns, has applied for a licence to sell alcohol between 7am and 11pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 9am to 6pm on Sunday.

Helston resident Tisha Browne said she was totally opposed to such extended hours.

"I think it is an absolutely appalling idea," she said. "It is so near the skate park and boating lake. It could lead to groups of youths hanging around down there drinking, not to mention people weaving across that busy road. I think it's a nightmare scenario."

Mrs Browne has urged anyone concerned at the proposals to contact Kerrier district council's licensing department as soon as possible.

A Kerrier spokeswoman confirmed Lidl had applied for the licence and said people had until the end of next week to make any comments.

If objections were raised, the application was likely to be considered by members of the licensing committee, she added.

Plans by Lidl to install illuminated signs at its new store have also prompted opposition from some local residents.

Discussing the proposals at a Helston town council planning meeting on Thursday, member Keith Reynolds said he had received three letters of objection, saying the proposed signs were too big and would be visually intrusive.

The committee agreed to recommend that the signs should be reduced in height and should only remain illuminated one hour either side of the store's opening times.

Planning permission for the new store was granted back in June.

Work has begun on site and the company says the store, which is expected to create around 30 jobs, could be open in time for Christmas.
