Children's TV presenter Simon Grant will be returning to his old school in Falmouth on Wednesday September 19 and 20 to work with students and perform the official opening ceremony of Falmouth as a Business and Enterprise School.
The presenter has spent the past four years working for CCBC, presenting a wide variety of shows, including The Saturday Show, CBBC's One and Two's Breakfast and Afternoon shows as well as presenting popular game show Hard Spell Abbey and science programme X-perimental. He has also appeared on Celebrity Masterchef.
Simon will spend two days at Falmouth School. On September 19 he will talk to Year 7 students at their morning assembly, before taking part with a colleague in a series of workshops in the school's Drama Studio. The two presenters will work with students on TV presenting skills, culminating in a film being made of the students interviewing Simon about his work. At 2 pm Simon will cut a ribbon in the school's Reception and open the new School Shop.
On September 20 Simon will officially open Falmouth as a Business and Enterprise School between 4pm and 5pm at a special ceremony attended by Governors, staff, sponsors, members of staff, parents, students and members of the local community. The ceremony will include music from some of the school bands and a cream tea.
Headteacher Sandra Critchley said: "This is a really exciting moment in the history of Falmouth School. We are delighted that our work in Enterprise education across the school has been recognised through the award of this status. "
"We are ready to use the additional funding the status brings to: develop a strong creative "can-do" culture; continue to build on the good standard of education provided by the school; to maximise lifetime opportunities for young people in the community, and the community of Falmouth as a whole. We are very grateful for the full support of our business partners and their generous sponsorship and look forward to working with our partners to deliver our development plans."
Falmouth School was awarded Business and Enterprise status with particular emphasis on the subjects of Maths, ICT and Business earlier this year. The school is keen to build on its existing vocational curriculum and very good links with local businesses, to develop a practical understanding of "Ethical Enterprise" in its students and to support the economic regeneration of Falmouth and the local community.
Other initiatives include the development of a Learning Gateway to improve communication with parents and carers, and the introduction of Virtual Learning Platforms with greater use of multi media and interactive teaching and learning strategies. The school has a well established "Learning to Learn" ethos and will be using both business mentors and student mentors to provide stimulus and encouragement to pupils.
The school received sponsorship from a wide range of international, national and local businesses. These included Arcadia and Microsoft (international companies); Watson Marlow; GeoScience Ltd; Falmouth Beach Hotel; Pendra Loweth and Preston Goldburn Solicitors, ( local businesses); the Friends of Falmouth School and Falmouth Grammar School Reunion and several generous individuals.
The school is looking forward to working with its partners in developing its specialism. These include Penryn College, Falmouth Primary School, King Charles School, Marlborough School, St Francis CoE School and St Mary's RC School. It will also work with Cornwall Education Business Partnership and with other secondary schools across Cornwall.
