Camborne 23, Maidenhead 20
Camborne came from behind to secure a deserved victory over their Berkshire visitors in front of a good sized crowd at the Rec.
The win capped a good day for the Cherry & Whites who confirmed their ambitious plans for refurbishing the changing facilities pre-match before going on to receive their RFU club accreditation from the gathered County representatives at half time.
Slow to settle the injury hit home side slipped 10-0 behind in the opening quarter with Maidenhead bagging unconverted tries from lock Sam Hallett and a fortuitous effort from centre George Blewitt.
In an isolated attack Camborne opened their account with Jake Champion’s regulation penalty but a monster effort slotted by Adam Lubbock saw the visitors 13-3 up at the break.
Playing down the slope the home side signalled their intent straight from the restart as scrum-half Taron Peacock’s industry created a try for centre Champion with the same player converting to cut the deficit to 10-13.
Soon after more Camborne pressure led to Champion knocking over another penalty shot to level matters.
Now well on top the Cherry & Whites took the lead on 55 minutes when fly half Rhodri Mcatee dived in wide out after a sustained attack. Things got even better almost immediately as Champion created an opportunity from which skipper Jon Drew sent veteran No 8 Dave Roberts crashing over for a 23-13 advantage.
Although the visitors grabbed a late bonus point with scrum-half Kieran Grey’s try under the posts converted by fly-half Lubbock it proved to be only a consolation as Camborne comfortably held on.
Camborne: tries, Champion, Mcatee, Roberts; con, Champion; pens, Champion 2.
Maidenhead: tries, Blewitt, Hallett, Grey; con, Lubbock; pen, Lubbock.
