TRURO City played their get-out-of-jail card to win their opening game of the season against Welton Rovers in the Toolstation Western League, but they needed no such help in Saturday's first qualifying round of the EON FA Cup.

Playing with a measured assurance and confidence to suggest that the earlier match was "just one of those games," City looked winners from the first whistle.

Whilst the home side might have felt aggrieved that they went empty-handed in the first game, there can be no such thoughts after this performance that saw City at something like their stylish best.

City set such a strong tempo from the off that Welton were unable to compete with it and on another very hot afternoon the Rovers defence was stretched and working overtime for long periods of the game.

City established an early grip on the tie when they took the lead after 15 minutes after they were awarded a free kick. It was taken very quickly by Ian Gosling to Kevin Wills who crossed to the far post for Mark Vercesi to power in his header.

Six minutes later City could have gone two goals ahead when Marcus Martin's shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Westlake.

Welton, who never seriously threatened the visitors' goal, stayed in contention by continuing to frustrate City with last-minute tackles and a fair helping of luck to reach the interval still just one goal down.

If Rovers were hoping to make a fight of it in the second half their plans were quickly disrupted when after 57 minutes they were reduced to ten men after a second yellow card incident.

The heat and pressure intensified as the ten men began to struggle and leave gaps and in the 69th minute Jake Ash doubled City's tally with a second goal scored from just inside the area with a crisp drive.

It was all hands to the pumps in the closing stages with Danny Harris unlucky not to score on two occasions with an effort cleared off the line and another hitting the bar in the final minute.

City are through to the second qualifying round with a result that was a little more comfortable than the scoreline suggests, but that is unlikely to be the case in the next round after they were drawn at home to Bath City.

Bath City are from the Blue Square South Conference and are no strangers to reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup.

They have a real pedigree and history in the competition and in 1963-64 reached the third round where they were eventually beaten 3-0 by Bolton Wanderers.

Among those who have played for Bath before moving on to big-name clubs are the likes of Tony Book (Manchester City), Alan Skirton (Arsenal), and more recently Jason Dodd (Southampton).

Director of football, Chris Webb, said: "It's nice to have a home draw and Bath City won't relish making the long trip to Cornwall in front of a possible 2,000 Cornish fans, so don't miss the tie of the round."

The tie is on September 29.

City are away to Street in the Toolstation Western League premier division on Saturday.
