TWELVE tries were touched down in a thougoughly entertaining friendly game at the Recreation ground.

Due to the England counties' trip to France, this was the second week running Redruth were without a league game and the Reds were grateful to Frank Butler for bringing down a Bath side to give them much-needed match practice.

The pace of the young home side earned them a 10-18 lead at half time, but in the second half the power and physicality of the Reds brought 40 points.

It took seven minutes for Bath to get on the board with a well worked try from Chris Jones converted by Luke Cozens. Pace once again opened up the Redruth defence two minutes later when George Hughes crossed for the first of his three tries.

After 18 minutes the Reds put together their first meaningful attack into the scoreboard corner which was quickly moved left for Paul Thirlby to touch down an unconverted try.

Cozens added two more penalties for Bath before half time, but the best move of the afternoon came after 35 minutes when Redruth's Faleono Seve broke out from deep in defence to go the length of the field combining with Steve Wood and Lewis Vinnicombe to finish off by touching down in the corner.

A typically forthright half time team talk from Nigel Hambly did the trick and in the second period the home pack gained the upper hand enabling Redruth to start to play a much more controlled and attractive game.

Peter Joyce one of the Reds' front row trio to be selected for the French tournament got back in time to take part in the game as a replacement. Joyce gained his England cap appearing against the game against Spain.

New signing from Henley, Steve Wood, showed his skills in the number 7 shirt while James Mann, who came on as a replacement, put in a very forceful second half performance.

There was an edge to the game with Reds Mark Richards and Bath's Mike Myerscough both given 10 minutes in the sin bin.

Second half tries for Redruth came from Seve, James Mann, and Ben Priddey (2), Chris Fuca and Steve Wood with Gareth Griffiths adding three conversions and Grant Thirlby two.

The visitors added two tries from Hughes whilst Cozens added another penalty and conversion.

Hambly was satisfied with his side's second half performance which he hopes will stand them in good stead for the league campaign that now gets under way in earnest when the Reds visit Southend.
