PORTHLEVEN 1

ILLOGAN 0

PORTHLEVEN pulled off another fine win in the Jolly's Combination League when they defeated champions Illogan 1-0 at Gala Park.

It was three points in the bag and a convincing win even though Porthleven had to play the final 30 minutes with 10 men after Robertson was sent off.

The opening period of the game was very even, though Illogan had slightly the better chances but found the Fishermen's defence on their mettle.

On 24 minutes Graham Cook had a good chance, but scuffed his shot at the vital moment and Stu Yates, who was man of the match, made a great run from defence and delivered a pass to Matt Fox who fired in a shot that failed to trouble the 'keeper. But this began a passage of play that without the brilliance of the Illogan goalkeeper, Danny Burrows, Port would have run away with the game.

Firstly he made a point blank save from a Craig Firth header and was on hand again twice more to thwart the Port forwards, but in the 40th minute Adlard made the breakthrough when his in swinging corner found the back of the net.

Firth had another good chance but his shot was just wide.

At the other end Stu Williams was on hand to punch away a good cross into the Port box as the half time whistle blew.

Illogan again started the brighter of the two teams in the second half and Williams and his defence were made to work very hard, but as they proved the previous Tuesday when beating Culdrose that under pressure they can come up with the goods.

Their cause wasn't helped when Robertson was dismissed for an over zealous tackle in the 65th minute.

Port became more defensive and Chambers replaced Cook as they tried to prevent Illogan getting any joy in the goal stakes.

Paul Ainscough on for Adlard tried his luck from 20 yards after Fox was bought down but failed to trouble the 'keeper with the free kick.

It all became very frantic as full time approached with Illogan pushing hard and on one occasion the cross of the game saw the ball creep past the goal without an Illogan forward getting the vital touch.

Dean Bray had a fine game and his physical presence was needed in the defensive battle. Port have the bonus of being on a good undefeated run and travel to Mullionon Saturday with plenty of confidence.
