VOSPERS Oak Villa had high hopes of sitting on top of the division one (West) of the South West Peninsula League, but they had their dream shattered after Porthleven demolished them 5-1.

What made the victory all the more remarkable was the fact that Port were without five of their squad and had to reshape their side.

Andy Westgarth missed an early chance when he headed Kevin Lawrence's cross wide, but the home side hit back with a free kick from Brian Jefferis that Scott Rogers, who had an impressive match, headed away.

The home side might have thought they were heading for the top spot when they opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Dan Murdoch's free kick was met by Chris Sulley who gave Steve Taylor no chance with a first-time volley.

Within a minute the Fishermen were back on level terms when good play between Martin Day and Mike Davis set up a chance for Martin Day to drive his shot past the goalkeeper for the equaliser.

Four minutes later Porthleven were in front when a great ball from Jamie Thirkle was touched inside the near post by Day to snap up his second goal.

Westgarth put an effort just wide of the upright after good work by Lawrence, but Oak Villa reminded Port that fortunes could quickly sway after Taylor had to make a good save from Davidson.

Port should have extended their lead following another good run by Thirkle, but Steve Brewer was unable to finish off the cross in front of an unguarded goal.

Port applied early pressure in the second half with Mark Holland shooting over and Brewer firing in a shot that Dan Johnson did well to get down to and save.

Another brilliant save by Johnson denied Westgarth, but he should have scored when he headed wide following a superb run and cross by Day.

Westgarth was not to be denied and in the 61st minute he headed in a cross by Lawrence.

Oak Villa's threat faded as the game went on and James Hoblin should have done much better than his half-hit shot at Taylor.

With 15 minutes to go Porthleven wrapped up victory with a fourth goal when Lawrence was brought down in the box. Lawrence dusted himself off and took the spotkick from which he made no mistake.

The Fishermen completed a satisfying afternoon with a fifth goal when Richardson miskicked a cross from Lawrence to give Westgarth the chance to hammer the ball in for his second goal.

Five minutes from time Angus Howlett, Hugh Howlett's brother, came on as substitute to make his debut for Porthleven.

All in all a good afternoon for Port, especially with so many disruptions to their line-up.

On Saturday the Fishermen are home to Bridport in the FA Vase. Kick off is 3pm.
