A Gunwalloe beach has been left spick and span thanks to the hard work of a team of volunteers during a world-wide clean up day.

The beach clean at Fishing Cove took place at the same time as cleans were also taking place in 147 countries around the world on the same day, thanks to an initiative led by the Marine Conservation Society.

The Gunwalloe clean was organised by David Roberts from Kennack Diving and proved successful, with a team of ten divers carrying out an underwater clean-out and a further ten volunteers carrying cleaning the beach area.

As a result, about 1,500 individual items were removed from the beach - the majority of which was general litter, such as plastic bottles and sun cream containers.

Mr Roberts said he was particularly pleased that no "nasty" waste was found, such as fishing tackle and nets, as this always proved a particular problem for the wildlife and environment.

However, one area that did cause some concern was the amount of dog mess that had been put in plastic bags by owners and then just discarded on the side in a big pile. Mr Roberts said this was particularly annoying, as there was a bin for such waste a bit further along the beach.

He added: "It went very well. It was a nice day, which helped. It was a good day."
