MAWNAN SMITH:WOMEN'S INSTITUTE: Since the July meeting, the ladies of Mawnan WI have certainly not been idle. Several members entered items and won prizes in the village show held in July. Winners came from various categories, cookery, craft, gardening and flower arranging.
Also in July, a group enjoyed a very pleasant day at Pine Lodge gardens in St Austell, visiting the many aspects of the garden and enjoying a cream tea. In August cream tea was on the agenda again when the president, Marion Collins, hosted a summer tea party in her garden. Members from the group's twinned WI, Madron, were invited and after tea the bouncy castle (intended for the children) had several members working off their delicious tea.
The craft group, assisted by other members made and filled small boxes for the stall at Mawnan Country Fair. This stall proved very popular with a prize every time for participants. After the busy summer, the September meeting was held at the Memorial hall. Marion told everyone of forthcoming events, the next being the harvest supper on October 5, with a ploughman's supper and musical entertainment. She then introduced the speaker Amanda Barlow from the Budock Vean hotel, who gave a light hearted report on running a small hotel. A vote of thanks was given by Victoria Curry.
The drama group held its first meeting on Monday. The craft group will meet again from September 25, with a trip to Exeter on the 27th.
The October meeting will be a talk titled "Infamous Women" by Christine Hunt and takes place on October 11.
