MAWNAN Fun Run enjoyed it's best year yet with a record turn out despite the poor weather on Sunday.

More than 225 men, women and children ran, hopped, walked and skipped their way around the 5k course, raising in excess of £2000 in the process for the Mawnan Playgroup new building.

Despite racing an extra few hundred metres after missing the home straight sign, race winner Dave Buzza romped home in a record 15 minutes 51 seconds.

It could have been red faces all round but he took it in good spirits,' said a marshal. It was a case of blink and we missed him as he sped past; we just didn't expect to see him back so quickly!'.

Quick-thinking marshals made a race of it themselves as they dashed to the entrance to direct the remaining racers the right way home!

Then it was plain sailing for the 226 people who made it past the post, with a crowd of well-wishers braving the rain to cheer the fun-runners home.

Some walked and talked while others took the dog! It was all part of the fun,' said an organiser. We had a team of 30 children and teachers from Mawnan School and even had a couple of fancy-dress racers, including Buzz Lightyear.

It's good to see so many people either turn out to race or just support their friends and family. What's lovely is to see whole families crossing the line. It really is a super community event and fun for all ages,' she added.

There was a wonderful selection of prizes for the winners too. Juliet Knowles was the first woman to cross the line in 19 minutes 02 seconds. First prizes of overnight stays at the Budock Vean Hotel went to both Dave and Juliet.

And runner-up racers Giles Kent and Rachel Medd will be able to celebrate their success with £25 each to spend with Wine in Cornwall.

There was plenty to be won for the younger participants too. Ryan Cleave and Hannah Snowdon were the first boy and girl to cross the line in the 12-17 category and they both received vouchers worth £15 from Trago Mills.

The prize for the quickest under 5 to complete the course was awarded to 4 year old Edward Mitchell, from the local school, along with the Don Bristow cup who at 75 years won the 70+ category.

After the race, the celebrations continued on Mawnan Playing Field. Now in its third year it was a feast of family fun with much more than the run itself.

There was face painting and crèche facilities for the children while adults rewarded themselves with a beer from Skinners Brewery, a pasty from Crantock bakery and delicious food from Chickpea Catering.

There was also a massage tent, courtesy of Lifestyle Chiropractors, to treat tired and weary limbs as well as help those about to take part limber up.

For the first year, there was giant clock at the finish line so that the serious and not so serious could see their times as they broke the tape and Riders Group provided a welcome shelter for those registering in the rain!

The organizers of the Mawnan Fun Run including Amanda Barlow, Sally Reed, Nigel and Carrie Gilmore, Jaimie and Annie Sibert and Melanie Dixon-Phillip were delighted with the result of all their hardwork over the past 12 months to make the day such a success.

We have to thank all our sponsors and helpers,' said a race-day organiser. We couldn't do it without them - Pure Blue water, Westcountry Fruit Sales, Guiseppes, Alanco and Berry & Co, it's this vital help that makes the day so memorable and enjoyable.'
