A support group for stroke victims has raised £170 to carry on their much-needed work in Helston.

A coffee morning held at The Clies raised the money for the Stroke Activity Society, which will use the funds to provide outings for members and guest speakers for their meetings.

Jan Carveth, chairperson of the group, said: "It was a very good day and very successful. We're very pleased with how much we raised."

In addition to the refreshments there was also a bookstall and bring and buy stall.

Mrs Carveth thanked everybody that supported the event, as well as The Clies for letting the group use their premises. She wished to thank Angela Caroll, Barefoot Island, Boots, Bowdens, Christophers Estate Agents, Inspirations, Joy Williams, Merlin Framers, Meneage News, Mike Abel, Natural Store, Revive, Smiths, Stevan Hall, Wards, Warrens and Whirlwind Sports for their "generosity and support."

The Stroke Activity Society was formed three years ago and since then has seen the numbers grow from just ten members to 30 members this year.

"There was obviously a need for it in the area," said Mrs Carveth. It was began after the original members attended a rehabilitation course at Helston Community Hospital and wanted to continue meeting after the course ended.

"When somebody has a stroke it's a bit like a bereavement, because the person is no longer the same person. We have all been through it, either as a stroke victim or as a carer. The group is a really fun, social thing where people can meet up and it gets some people who have very little contact out and about in the community, meeting people," she added.
