More people appear to be against the proposal to make Helston's Sanctuary Lane a no-through road than in favour of it, the town council was told last Thursday.

Pam Lyne, Cornwall county councillor for the Helston east ward, said the consultation period over the proposal to place a bollard halfway down Sanctuary Lane, to create a no-through road between Godolphin Road and Beacon Parc, had now closed.

It began at the request of Mrs Lyne, who had received calls from a number of residents concerned about the number of vehicles using the narrow road as an alternative route to access the centre of Helston, especially during the rush hour periods, as well as the use by heavy goods vehicles.

However, speaking to members of Helston town council at their last meeting, Mrs Lyne said that at the end of the consultation period a total of 73 responses had been received.

Of these, 25 were in support of the plans, 15 weren't happy about it but were supporting the general idea and 33 were objecting completely. A petition containing 200 signatures of objection had also been received by the county council.

Mrs Lyne said: "I have now said to the county surveyor that I don't think the scheme ought to go ahead, but we should spend some time having appropriate signs set up at each end of Sanctuary Lane to discourage traffic use of it. I think that's a better answer to the problem, rather than closing it down."

Helston mayor Ronnie Williams agreed that out of the responses he had received, the number of people objecting was "much, much greater" than the number in favour of the scheme.

A decision will now be taken by the county council.
