PORTHLEVEN: WOMEN'S INSTITUTE: The speaker this month was Julia Berry, local Police Community Support Officer, who came to talk about her role in the village. As there is no police presence in the village it is Julia's role to give support to the residents in relation to issues that arise.
Her role is very varied but revolves around supporting the village in areas of education of children within the school in respect of their safety, supporting the housing associations in gaining ASBOs against tenants whose behaviour is unacceptable, and dealing with homeless people and the problems that arise from them.
There were specific issues that some members asked about and these included the problems caused by cars being parked in Fore Street. Even though parking is not allowed during the day, youths use the streets as skate parks and cars are driven at high speeds along Fore Street and Torleven Road. Julia advised that in respect of the problems with the cars witnesses would have to provide registration numbers before anything could be done, and that there was nothing she could do in respect of the skate boarders.
At the end of her talk Julia advised that the police are going to arrange a meeting in the village that will be chaired by PACT', Partners and Communities Together. At this meeting the police will explain about a new system they are to put in place that will gather information about the concerns of people in the neighbourhood so that they can work with them to take action to tackle problems.

Next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 10, when there will be a craft evening for members.
