GERMOE: DISTRICT WI: A most enjoyable beetle drive was held at the September meeting of Germoe and District WI - sounds of shaking dice, cries of "not another body", then "Beetle" and general movement of winners and losers changing tables. Pam McNally won, with Joy Blackaller taking the booby prize, and Margaret Nicholls was thanked for running the evening.
Arrangements were made for the visit by Carclaze WI - the branch's twin - and the Group Party to be held at the beginning of October. The Four Corner Day due to take place on Wednesday, October 10, will be postponed until next year if there are not sufficient applications by October 1.
Germoe had been lucky in the county ballot for the visit to Highgrove House and Phyllis Williams' name was drawn out of the hat. She gave an interesting and amusing account of her trip, which included a visit to Wells Cathedral and museum, a night in Bristol, the following morning at Westonbirt Arboretum before going to Highgrove and a guided tour of the gardens.
There are many gardens within the whole, each with a different theme. The walled gardens have organic apple and plum trees and different vegetables, while Prince Charles' private, peaceful garden is black and white. The beautiful Carpet Garden is based on a Turkish carpet with a mosaic fountain in the centre, which won a silver medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2001. The tour ended with tea and delicious organic biscuits and a visit to the shop selling exclusive goods including a 2008 calendar of the garden at the different seasons and "royal" chocolate fudge, which Phyllis brought back to be shared with everyone.
The competition for a holiday souvenir was won by Dorothy Richards, with Maureen Gibson second and Margaret Nicholls third. Sue Thompson, Pam McNally and Jackie Barnaby won the raffle prizes.
Next month's meeting on Tuesday, October 9, at 7.30pm in Praa Sands Community Centre will be an audio visual presentation by Mr and Mrs P Robinson, titled "Padstow to Fowey". The competition is "Own photo of a Cornish Water Scene". Visitors and new members are always welcome at the meetings.
BREAGE: BREANEY CHAPEL: On Monday, September 17, Breaney Chapel Harvest Supper and sale raised over £215 for World Mission. Thanks to everybody who supported.
On Sunday morning the steward, Paul Combellack, welcomed the preacher, Jenny Bales. On Thursday a group of "hardy people" are off to take the "Three Peaks Challenge". Paul said he will be driving (not climbing). This sponsored event is to climb Snowdon, Scarfell and Ben Nevis. Sponsorship money will be divided between Children's Hospice South West and Breaney Chapel. All being well, they will be home late on Saturday!
Music Corner was provided by Paul and Craig Jenkin and Mary Louise Combellack.
The preacher invited several of the youngsters, and in some cases their parents as well, to demonstrate "Passing on the Invitation".
Jenny used a modern version of the Holy Bible to report on Naomi and Ruth, the Lepers who were healed and the Roman Centurian and family. Coffee Time Fellowship followed afterwards.
Breaney has a Safari Meal on October 6 (booking required).
There wasn't an evening service at Breaney, because they were invited to join with Ashton Mission Church Harvest Songs of Praise. Seven attended from Breaney. St Breaca and St Germoe robed choirs provided six items led by their musical director.
The organist also played for the nine congregational hymns, and Holy Scripture readings also covered the Thanksgiving and Praise theme.
LEEDSTOWN AUTUMN SHOW: This year, despite the difficult growing conditions, the autumn show was an unqualified success, with many old and new exhibitors. While entries were slightly down, the standard was exceptionally high.
The show was opened by Paul Hunkin, head teacher at Crowan School, who spoke of the importance of village communities working together.
Buttonholes were presented to him and his wife by Kimberleigh Yould and Matthew Bird.
