Helston 11 Newquay 4
Helston played host to Newquay in their first Under 12 Aliance League game of the season and within a minute found themselves 1-0 up after R Trathen latched onto a through ball and lashed a shot passed the Newquay 'keeper.
Helston did not sit back after their early strike and increased their lead to 3-0 within five minutes of kick off. Newquay were not competing with Helston and R Trathen scored two further goals, one direct from a corner to make it 5-1 at half time.
T Millard, playing alongside Trathen, was a thorn in the side of Newquay, clearing space for Trathen to exploit and L Trathen, DJ Walker, G Leathley and M James were dominating the midfield, supporting the attackers and covering for the defence.
The second half began in the same vein as the first half had started, with R Trathen latching on to another through ball and blasting a shot passed the helpless 'keeper.
Newquay were forced to up their game and scored three well-taken goals in the second half, none of which gave J Bain in the Helston goal any chance.
The Helston defence of T Sedgwick, R Millard and G Mills were solid and were not at fault for any of the goals, playing like they had played together for some time.
R Trathen went on to score a further two goals, with further goals by T Millard (two) and G Mills.
This was an excellent team performance that belied the fact that this was this side's first 11-a-side game and hopefully should give the team confidence to have a great season again.
Holmans 2 Helston 1 On a cold bleak Sunday morning with the wind driving into the players faces, Helston took the game to Holmans from the kick off and hit the post on three separate occasions, whilst not being troubled at the back.
Two lapses of concentration by the Helston defence, however, allowed Holmans to go in ahead 2-0 at half time. With the wind and rain on their backs Helston again took the game to Holmans and within five minutes of the second half reduced the deficit after a fine strike from T Millard left the Holmans 'keeper with no chance.
Helston continued to pressure the Holmans defence and R Trathen had a goal disallowed after the referee ruled it out for offside.
The Helston defence was not troubled during the second half and deserved something from this game, but left empty handed.
Next game at home Sunday against Charlestown.
