A new book on the history of Christianity in Cornwall will be launched by The Rt Revd William Ind, Bishop of Truro, at St Michael's Mount on Michaelmas Day, Saturday September 29.
Written by the eminent historian Professor Nicholas Orme the book Cornwall and the Cross: Christianity 500-1560' will be launched at Folly Field, following a pilgrimage from the Mount led by the Bishop.
The illustrated paperback is published as part of the England's Past for Everyone' initiative which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and run by the Victoria County History at the University of London.
The Victoria County History of Cornwall (VCHofC) Trust was set up to oversee the project and to secure the local funding which would ensure Cornwall's participation.
Pupils from Camborne School and Community College who have been learning about Christianity in Cornwall as part of the project, will also join the celebrations.
Dressed in medieval costume they will follow the ancient pilgrim route from Ludgvan Church to the Mount, where they will be met by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Lady Mary Holborow, High Sheriff of Cornwall, the Hon. Evelyn Boscowen, and the Mayor of Marazion, Cllr Martin Britten.
At 3.00 p.m. Bishop Bill will lead them safely back across the causeway to Marazion for the formal launch and the opportunity to buy the book and view exhibitions of local historical interest.
