HELSTON: ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH: Parish Communion celebrated the feast of St Michael and All Angels, or Michaelmas, with the Rector presiding and assisted by the Rev Dorothy Noakes, with Betty Booker, lay reader.
Among the congregation was the Rev Grace Laker, a former curate at St Michael's, who was on holiday with her husband. Bob Woodcock read the lesson and the guest organist was Dr John Lansdowne.
The Archangel Michael has several feasts, including one on the May 8, Helston Flora Day. In his sermon, the Rector sketched the stories, myths and legends that connect Michael not only with Helston, but a time-honoured pilgrim trail that leads to Rome. He also spoke of angels in their roles as protectors of human souls, as heavens musicians, as deliverers of God's judgement and as fighters of evil.
Junior Church, meantime, was preparing for the Harvest Thanksgiving to be held on Sunday at 9.30am.
DARBY & JOAN: The club held its harvest festival with Canon David Miller leading the service. The hymns were accompanied by Mr Richard Berry at the piano. A wonderful array of goods, generously given by the members, were auctioned at the end of the service and the proceeds were divided between the church and the club. It was a very successful afternoon enjoyed by all.
DEGIBNA: METHODIST CHURCH: The Sunday morning service was conducted by John Lucas. The lessons were read by Franklyn Moyle, John Bilkey and Billy Kendall. The Circuit United service was conducted by the Rev Andrew Hill. The lessons were read by Anne Moyle and Alan Higgs. The organist was Margaret Bilkey.
LOWERTOWN: METHODIST CHURCH: The Rev Andrew Hill led Sunday's service, which included the sacrament.
Margaret Eva was the organist.
