WELLINGTON 0pts

TRURO 16pts

THE value of planning your strategy and tightening up in certain areas paid off handsomely for Truro who pulled off a fine win away to Wellington.

Truro's midweek training had focused on team-defence and set-piece play whilst match day talk had encouraged pragmatism when appropriate in response to the team's inclination towards knee-jerk youthfull exuberance.

Pleasingly, the city side showed an encouraging maturity as it squeezed a competitive Wellington team out of this game despite making five enforced changes to the previous week's starting line-up.

Their edge at set-piece enabled them to vary the pace and delivery of possession and ruffle an undoubtedly well-drilled home pack.

Wellington's backs looked inventive and pacy but were denied time and space by an aggressive and collective Truro defence which invariably caused errors and turnovers.

Starting down the slope, Truro forced their opponents to play on the back-foot and in their own half and a ruck offence on Wellington's 22 metre line was punished by a Scott Martin penalty.

Minutes later, off a dynamic maul that sucked in the home back row, scrum-half Rikki Brandham executed his trade-mark show and go down the narrow side to scamper over for a converted try.

Truro's dominance of territory and play continued throughout the second period with Daniel Dunkin outstanding at centre making both incisive breaks and big tackles.

Inevitably Truro's "cider-press" approach forced Wellington to offend in key areas enabling Martin to kick two further penalties.

Wellington enjoyed a purple patch in the final quarter as they worked tenaciously for a score, buit the raw power of replacement Truro prop Isaac Scoble was most evident as his team drove Wellington off their own attacking scrummage. He subsequently made two bone-jarring turnover tackles ensuring a clean sheet for the city boys.
