FOXHOLE STARS 2
WENDRON 0
WENDRON made a first round exit in the Cornwall Senior Cup after going down to a 2-0 defeat away to Foxhole Stars.
With goalkeeper Bryan Scoffin consigned to match reporting duty pending his 35-day holiday courtesy of the Cornwall County FA, manager Steve Webber drafted in Mark James to give the goalkeeper some match time at the higher level.
Needless to say Mark's contribution was of significantly more value to his side than that of the stand-in scribe's evaluation of what took place on the pitch.
Wendron edged the early stages and took the game to the home side, but found it difficult to find a way through a very solid and physical home defence.
Chances were at a premium for both sides, but Wendron had a fleeting chance to score when Matt McIlroy broke through, but under pressure he failed to get his shot away.
A minute later it needed a great header by Andy Munro to deny Foxhole, but despite a period of pressure from the visitors all they could manage from it was a corner.
Pete Maclean had a great chance to put Wendron in front, but shot over the bar and then it needed James to keep his side on level terms with a fine save.
Unfortunately, parity didn't last too much longer when Foxhole snatched the lead right on half time. Scott Hill knocked over a corner and although Adam Holland's first header was blocked, Wendron were slow to react and that gave Holland time to lash the loose ball into the net.
Maclean was booked on the hour and a minute later a corner from Simon Williamson struck a post as Foxhole scrambled the ball away.
Wendron began to enjoy a period of pressure with McIlroy's effort bundled over the line for a corner and then Brett Andrew should have done better with a header that he put it over the bar.
Fifteen minutes from time Foxhole virtually assured themselves of victory when from a breakaway Hill threaded the ball through for Colin Morris to give James no chance with an assured finish.
Adam Toy almost got Wendron on the scoresheet with a terrific 20-yard shot, but goalkeeper Ryan Holland pulled off a fine save.
On Saturday Wendron are home to St Austell in the Carlsberg SW Peninsula League and play them away the following week.
Wendron: M James, S Hodson, A Munro, J Till, P Maclean, G Pascoe, A Toy, B Andrew, S Williamson, T Harris, M McIlroy. Subs: S Whitney, M O'Neill, S Johnston.
WENDRON 1 NEWQUAY 3
Wendron were still looking for their first win of the season in the Jolly's Combination League after they were beaten 3-1 at home by a strengthened Newquay side.
Wendron, who should see the return of several regular players over the next couple of weeks, struggled to contain the visitors in the opening half who dominated much of what went on.
They deservedly took the lead when Shaun Lawrence thumped in a cross for Luke Whelden to give the goalkeeper no chance.
Just before half-time Wendron got back on level terms when he got on the end of a long ball out of defence by Adam Keenan to score.
Wendron came into the game much more in the second half, but it was the visitors who seized the initiative with two goals in the space of five minutes from substitute Paul Cox.
His first goal came from a volley following a crossfield move and he doubled his tally five minutes later when he headed in.
