Dispelling the myth that children are fussy eaters, pupils from Trannack School tucked in with relish to food from different countries around Europe.

Olives and Parma ham to represent Italy were met with gusto, while the German salami and French baguettes proved equally popular.

The food-tasting session was part of a European Day of Languages, in which the youngsters were also shown cartoon figures speaking phrases from each of the countries, which they then had to repeat back.

Cherry Hawker, new head teacher at the school, said: "The children really enjoyed it. They really did have a lovely afternoon and all the children from aged four to 11 got to try the different foods and try the different phrases. It was lots of hard work for the teachers and teaching assistants, to get it all prepared, but it was well worth it."

She added that the pupils already had regular French lessons, but the European Day allowed the youngsters to not just speak the language but find out where the country was in relation to other countries and try the food from them all.
