A Penryn slimming world group has raised money for several Cornwall charities.
The three individual groups, which meet at Penryn Rugby Club and Falmouth’s Dracaena Centre, raised a total of £380 for, Tanya’s Courage, Flicka Donkey Sanctuary and Cornwall Hospice Care.
“The lovely thing is my groups chose which charities they wanted to support, hence why they wanted Tanya’s Courage. It’s nice because they feel part of what they’re raising for,” said local group leader Beverley Dobell.
The money was raised through donations of loose change at each session, as well as through raffles at the groups’ Christmas parties.
“We’re a local group with local people… These charities are very close to people’s hearts,” Beverley added.
Flicka Donkey Sanctuary based near Penryn cares for over 100 rescued donkeys and horses who have been abused, abandoned or neglected, and Cornwall Hospice Care provides special clinical support for adults in the county.
Tanya’s Courage Trust supports those with and affected by cancer. On the donation, Penryn shop manager Michelle Bray said: “It’s awesome. We’re quite community based, and to get all of these different groups to together is what it’s all about.”
The money will go towards supporting various stages of care in the charity.
“The charity supports teenagers and young adults within Cornwall in whatever they need whilst they’re going through their journey with cancer. Initially we’ll give them grants when they’re first diagnosed and we do anything we can to support them during this period,” Michelle added.
