Great Britain's Olympic hopefuls of the future may well come from Cornwall, if the results of the annual RYA South West Zone Championships are anything to go by.

At the two-day event held at Restronguet Sailing Club in Falmouth, home sailors completed a clean sweep in the Oppie class as Restronguet's Jack Martin (14), Christian Townrow (14) and David Grant (13) took 1-2-3. Meanwhile fellow Restronguet representatives Jamie Bland (14) and Tom Cosier (10) overcame Penzance's James Brant (14) and Daniel Peek (13), third at the end of day one, and overnight leaders James Wilkinson (14) from Mount's Bay and Will Searle (13) of Restronguet, to take the crown in the Mirror class.

Racing was held in the Optimist, Topper, Laser 4.7, RS Feva, Cadet, Mirror and Hobie Dragoon dinghy classes while the windsurfers competed in the BIC Techno 293 4.5, 5.5, 6.8 and 7.8 classes.

The RYA Zone Championships traditionally mark the end of the Junior racing season and the start of a hard winter's training. More than 1,000 of Britain's hottest young sailing and windsurfing properties did battle at seven venues across England and Scotland, challenging themselves against the best of their peers within their area, under the watchful eye of their local RYA High Performance Managers and other senior RYA racing staff.

The purpose of the RYA Zone/Home Country Squad Programme is to feed talented sailors into the RYA National Junior Squad Programme at the appropriate age and ability to enable them to succeed at World and European Championships.
