Falmouth Green Centre are encouraging local people to go out and collect seeds from local Native Trees throughout this month and donate them to the projects tree nursery.

The community enterprise project based behind Falmouth School, will grow on the seeds collected as part of its Growing Trees from Seed project, once nurtured the trees will be sold on in future years, to encourage tree planting and generate income for Falmouth Green Centre.

Joan Gaynor, Falmouth Green Centre co-ordinator says,"Seed gathering is fun, easy to do, and a sustainable way to obtain young trees for planting. Once nurtured and cared for, they could eventually grow into heritage trees and be of great historical or cultural significance to future generations".

Ms Gaynor added: "At the moment there are plenty of berries, nuts and seeds falling from the trees so this is the ideal time to collect them, with friends and family from native trees in local woods or parks, as part of a outdoor activity."

Seed-gathering events are co-ordinated nationally by The Tree Council, which originally launched Seed Gathering Sunday in 1998, However it is now extended to a month long event, to provide greater opportunities for people to get out and collect seeds.

Pauline Buchanan Black, director-general of The Tree Council said "we relaunched as Seed Gathering Season last year because we were receiving so much feedback that seed-ripening times were changing and certainly, there is great variance within the UK. We felt it was a good time to extend our annual celebration and we are really pleased that it is proving to be such a success again this year."

Local seed collectors can donate their seeds to Falmouth Green Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout October, organisers recommend to store seeds in paper bags or re-use old envelopes.
