CASUALTY reduction agencies will be targeting Falmouth and Penryn next week with a mock graveside scene to raise awareness of excessive speed on roads.
Cornwall County council's road safety unit, the safety camera partnership and other agencies including the police, traffic engineers and driving instructors are all working together this month towards that end.
On October 17 they will be targeting different venues in the locality including Falmouth School, Penryn College and Asda. In this way they hope to reach all ages of drivers and potential passengers too.
Visual displays will be set up in all the venues mocking up a graveside scene which will include a coffin and headstone which reads: "Jan 2006 - Dec 2006. In memory of the 88 people who were killed or seriously injured in vehicles on the roads of Falmouth and Penryn. Don't let these casualties be in vain. Think! Road Safety."
Road casualty statistics show that there is a particular problem in these areas with speeding, and also other related aspects of road safety such as seatbelt wearing.
By using this visually arresting display it is hoped that it will get people's attention and the staff on hand can talk to students and the public about the road safety issues, raise awareness of the local problem and offer information and advice.
