Two reports published today show that Devon and Cornwall Police Force is performing well and is in a strong position to meet the demands of modern day policing.

In its annual inspection report Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) looked at the force's performance in Neighbourhood Policing, Performance Management and Protecting Vulnerable People (a category which includes child abuse, domestic violence, public protection and missing people).

The report, which considers the period up to April 2007, finds that the Force is Good' at Performance Management and Fair' in all other areas.

Overall the HMIC report found that Devon and Cornwall Police have met all the set national standards for policing.

A second report also released today, The Annual Police Performance Assessments, found that Devon and Cornwall was rated Fair' in areas including neighbourhood policing, local priorities and resources and efficiency and Good' at both tackling crime and for its work regarding serious crime and public protection.

The Assessments (which include the Statutory Performance Indicators and Her Majesty's Inspectorate's Inspection Report) aim to help the Force and the Police Authority ensure they are firmly focused and accountable for the service they deliver.

Deputy Chief Constable Tony Melville said: "The publication of these two reports is positive news for Devon and Cornwall Police. Since the inspection by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary ended six months ago we have continued to improve our performance and this is reflected in the growing rates of public satisfaction in our work.

"The Force now has a new team of Chief Officers and we have recently begun to develop our vision for the next five years, namely to become one of the top performing forces in the country.

"Both reports show a consistent and high level of performance which is testament to the hard work, dedication and professionalism of police officers, support staff, volunteers, our partners and the communities we serve. Although we still have work to do to meet our goals we are confident that we are moving in the right direction."
