Work on the Penwerris Lane (Coachworks) student accommodation development halted after a landslip came within metres of flats above.

There have been several slips in the quarry since construction work began in January, and the biggest one took place last Tuesday night (March 5).

Pamela Callen recently bought a flat in the Treloquithick building in Meadowbank Road, overlooking the development site.

Just two months after moving in to her "dream home", she woke up to find that the landslip had brought the edge of the quarry right up to her garden.

She said: "It's very worrying. I wake up in the middle of the night, especially with the winds, and I just don't know what's going to happen.

"There's no room for it to slip any further, it's pretty much right in our garden now. They should have never dug out the quarry wall in the first place."

Since the slip on Tuesday night, barriers have been erected both in the Treloquithick gardens and in the building site below.

Work has been halted on that section of the quarry face, although contractors were still carrying out work elsewhere on the site when the Packet visited it on Friday.

The Penwerris Lane development has attracted a great deal of controversy since plans were first put forward for the 134-bed student accommodation building, with many commenters saying that it will create traffic problems in the area.

Contractors working on the site have been contacted for a comment.
