No 'Dog Friendly Pub of the Year' is complete without its own pub dogs - and at Gunwalloe's Halzephron Inn they come in the form of red setters Rooster and Diego.

While landlords Claire and Ian Murray are welcoming their human guests, Rooster and Diego are doing the same to their canine customers.

It is this level of greeting that helped the pub win July's Packet Pub of the Year category.

A delighted Claire said: "We probably greet dogs before the owners.

"There's a plentiful supply of dog biscuits on the bar, and water bowls inside and outside.

"We give people advice on dog friendly beaches they can walk on, and places they can stay. They're just generally welcome."

Dogs are allowed everywhere in the pub except the furthest end restaurant, and there are even posters on the wall advertising a local dog training business, with dog ornaments above the fireplace.

Despite all this, Claire said they were still "absolutely astounded" to have won the title, voted for Packet readers.

She added: "It's lovely that our customers recognise the effort we put in to including dogs and felt they needed to vote for us.

"Lots of places accept dogs, but I think we have have got a special something on them."

It comes hot on the tail of the Halzephron winning Best Dog Friendly Pub in the South West with DogBuddy.com.
