Exeter University 13, Camborne 20
Camborne made it four wins on the spin to consolidate third spot in the South West Premier table as they deservedly saw off the spirited students at Topsham.
On a heavy pitch the Cherry & Whites pack held the upper hand throughout as the visitors dominated territory and possession for long periods.
Camborne made a strong start going 5-0 up early on with prop Malcolm Hearn plunging over for a rare try after a powerful driving maul took play to the home try line.
Although the University reduced the deficit with a penalty, on the half hour ‘Town’ stretched the lead with a fine converted try. After flanker Martin Lawrence won a turnover deep in the home half Rhys Brownfield’s well judged long pass released England Fire Service left wing Lewis Thomas who raced to the corner flag. Fly-half Brownfield then knocked over an excellent conversion.
Outstanding Camborne defence ensured it remained 3-12 at the break and soon after the interval a pushover score from a close range scrum dotted down by scrum half Taron Peacock increased their lead further.
Going into the final quarter the Cherry & Whites went almost out of sight when Brownfield slotted a regulation penalty for 3-20 however thereafter the home defence repelled all visiting efforts to bag the fourth try bonus point.
Late on the University gained some consolation with a converted score and on the final whistle a losing bonus point was secured with an angled penalty.
Camborne will look to keep their fine run going when they welcome Exmouth to the Recreation Ground this weekend.
