Camborne 16, Okehampton 7
Camborne mastered the tricky conditions astutely to record a deserved victory over Okehampton at the Recreation Ground.
Full credit must go to referee Zerran Bell who controlled proceedings superbly well and to the Cherry & Whites ground staff who ensured the game went ahead.
The home side move back up to third spot in the South West Premier table as a result.
Although the visitors had the better of opening quarter territory playing down the slope determined home defence kept the line intact and when Camborne broke out Jake Champion fired his side in front with a 25th minute penalty.
The score remained 3-0 at half time and soon after the resumption in worsening conditions fly half Champion doubled the advantage with a penalty shot head on to the posts.
On 50 minutes dissent from an Okehampton player earned a further regulation opportunity for Champion which he duly booted for a 9-0 lead.
Camborne’s resolute tackling and well judged kicking kept Okehampton on the back foot and going into the closing stages the Cherry & Whites made the game safe with their solitary try of the afternoon. Industrious centre Rob Gurnett intercepted a stray pass on half way before romping 50 metres to dot down his first league try for the Club near the posts. Champion’s conversion took the home side out of sight at 16-0.
With the final play of the game Okehampton broke upfield to gain some consolation with a converted score.
