A volunteer scheme set up to help those affected by Coronavirus has been launched in Cornwall.

‘Flu Friends’ is a service run by Volunteer Cornwall and is looking to build up a network of people around the county willing to help others who may be housebound, either due to having Coronavirus or being quarantined because of potential exposure.

Volunteer Cornwall manager Andy Brelsford said: “Being confined indoors for two weeks can cause huge problems for someone who is already isolated or who lives alone.

“We need to have people ready to step in to help others, especially as we don’t yet know how this might unfold.”

The charity is inviting people to come forward to register their interest in becoming a ‘Flu Friend’. The premise is simple: be ready to help others in your area, on an ‘as and when’ basis.

It might include collecting medicines or basic supplies, such as a pint of milk or loaf of bread. It will not, however, involve personal care such as cleaning or manual handling.

People keen to help can sign up by emailing mid@volunteercornwall.org.uk or call 01872 266988.

Mr Brelsford acknowledged that there may be some potential challenges, adding: “Some people may be reluctant to volunteer for this role because they are worried about the risks of catching it themselves but we are confident that the Cornish people won’t sit by whilst older and vulnerable members of our communities are left to fend for themselves.

"This is a chance to do something really worthwhile and show people that Cornwall still has a strong sense of community spirit.”

Volunteers who become Flu Friends receive guidance on how to protect themselves and reduce the risk of catching or spreading the virus.
