THE current situation we find ourselves in can be a rather lonely experience.

I am one of those people whose life revolves around sport. If I’m not covering it in my role as sports reporter for the Packet, I am reading about it, talking about it, watching it on television, and so on.

We are so used to having mountains of sports content available at any moment – be it live games to watch, podcasts to listen to, news stories or features to read – and when it stops as suddenly as it has done, it can be hard.

A lack of sport is far from the biggest problem we face at the moment, but for those of us whose lives are so heavily dominated by it, it does leave a huge gap.

Sport is a hugely social affair, and some of those people whose lives revolve around it may find themselves cut off from their peers, with these new rules of self-isolating and social distancing creating further division.

The idea of feeling a bit lost without seeing another throw or kick of a ball on a field may seem strange, but I do fall into that category, and I’m sure others do too.

Aside from the actual sport, many of our social lives depend on chatting to the men and women manning the turnstiles or the tea huts, or those stood on the terraces next to us every weekend, or those in the clubhouse before and after the game.

Being suddenly cut off from that can be a huge shock to the system.

We don’t know when we will be able to have this massive part of our lives back, so if you’re feeling isolated and a little bit lost without it, I’m inviting you to get in touch just to have a chat.

Want to talk about your favourite team, how you first fell in love with your sport/club, or just want to talk? Please feel free to give me a call, send me an email, message me on WhatsApp or DM me on Twitter.

If you don’t want to talk to me – that’s fine, I take no offence – but want to get in touch with those that you would normally be socialising with, then why not give them a call, send them a message, or find someone who put you in contact with them?

Like several communities, the sporting community is a wonderful one and we will stick together in these uncertain times.

All the best,

Matt Friday
