Public recycling banks are to be removed across Cornwall by the end of the summer - and in some towns within a matter of weeks.

Information on Cornwall Council's website confirms that it will be removing the facilities from 65 sites across the county.

In some towns, including Falmouth and Helston, this will be done in just over three weeks, but it states all should be gone by the end of September.

It follows a decision from the council's Cabinet last November to remove the banks - causing dismay among many residents.

The reason given by the council at the time was that the banks been vandalised and misused by people and businesses.

It means that as of the week beginning August 10 there will be no more recycling banks at Falmouth's Swanpool, Grove Place or Gyllyngvase car parks, or Helston's Fairground and Trengrouse Way car parks.

They will also be removed from Truro's Viaduct Car Park, Camborne's Rosewarne Car Park, Penzance's Wherry Town Car Park, Perranporth's Wheal Leisure Car Park, St Agnes's Trelawney Road Car Park and Porthtowan on this date.

The Lizard will have no layby recycling banks even earlier, as these will go during the week beginning August 3, along with those in Hayle's Commercial Road, Wadebridge's Piggy Lane and at Polbathic near St Germans.

Dates for when they will go from the remaining car parks, including Porthleven's Shrubberies, Mullion's Atlantic Forge and Redruth's New Cut, as well as on the Prussia Cove road at Rosudgeon and at Coverack are still be confirmed.

Banks at Trekenning and Carlyon Bay have already been removed.

The full list of recycling banks to go can be found on the Cornwall Council website.

On the website it states: "These recycling banks were put in place before we introduced our household recycling collections.

"Recycling is collected from every household in Cornwall every two weeks."

The council is not removing banks provided by supermarkets in their own car parks, or those at its 14 Household Waste and Recycling Centres.

It states that anyone who who has been using the recycling banks should instead start using their household recycling collections or take their recycling to the nearest Household Waste and Recycling Centre

"We have given town and parish councils the option of taking over the management of recycling banks in their area," it added.

Only Mevagissey and Constantine have currently opted to do this.
